RATS NEST MR. BUBBLE
GROUP CELEBRATES 10 The Seattle, WA
"Mr. Bubble Group" of Wharf Rats celebrated its 10 year anniversary
during the summer, Mr. Bubblle makes getting clean more fun than
getting dirty! It was founded by Wharf Rats in the Seattle
metropolitan area in 1991. The group had a potluck dinner party/meeting
at it's current location, the Fremont Baptist Church in Seattle. In attendance
were old group members and newcomers alike. Copious amounts of ice cream
were consumed. Originally an official Alcoholics Anonymous meeting by
group conscience vote, the meeting began in a Dead Head coffee house in
North Seattle. The group met in a cozy little room in the coffee house,
decorated with psychedelic posters lit with black lights. The owner/manager
was only too happy to play the tapes we brought on his sound system during
the meeting. After a few years, the group voted to secede from AA and
became an independent Wharf Rats meeting. When the coffee house manager
closed his shop, the meeting moved to the Fremont Baptist Church, a church
that hosts many 12-step fellowship meetings. Home group members pooled
their Maxell cassette tapes "Max Points" and had enough to redeem
them for a boom box for the group, so we could continue to play tunes
at the meeting. [The Maxell Corp. was so stunned they called our Treasurer
to find out who we were because they had never hadanyone redeem enough
"Max Points" to qualify for a boom box; the highest reward!]
When attendance dwindled to near extinction, a decision was made by home
group members at the time to affiliate with Narcotics Anonymous with the
unanimous agreement not to include the NA "Clarity Statement"
in order to welcome any Wharf Rats regardless of their drug of choice.
The Mr. Bubble Group is still going strong, meeting every Tuesday night,
carrying the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers. Last
fall, someone broke into our locked storage box in the church and stole
our beloved group boom box from Maxell. (Whom-ever you are: its
your karma and your 9th step). But in the true spirit of Wharf Rats unity,
home group member Kirby R. brings his own boom box to the meeting every
week so we can still play Dicks Picks and Phil CDs while we share
our experience, strength and hope in recovery. NY Metro
